About Tom
Hello…I graduated with a PhD in anthropology from Queen’s University, Belfast. Before my PhD, I completed my Master’s degree in anthropology, receiving a distinction. My PhD explored postgraduate social science students in the UK and Ireland during the COVID-19 pandemic, a stressful and uncertain time for many of us. While my PhD was ‘on hold’ due to the pandemic, I worked in an NHS care home for several months. My Master’s research explored place-making with Hindu devotees in a temple (mandir) in Belfast.
Before my academic period (that sounds like an artist’s colour phase!) I had a varied career path. I worked as a nurse in specialist neurosurgical and neuro-radiological units. As a volunteer in a small youth and health project, I lived with a family in Bengaluru (then Bangalore), India in the mid-1990s. After my undergraduate degree (St. John’s College, Durham), I worked in qualitative market research companies, then as an advertising copy advisor and investigations executive for the Advertising Standards Authority.
Why am I telling you about my past academic, healthcare and commercial careers?
